Abercrombie and
What?
So, Abercrombie and Fitch? What does that have to do with me being a Christian? It has to do more with the history of the store rather than the clothes itself. It seems like you need to own an oil company in order to invest in a few outfits from their store. Pretty expensive….
The story of A&F begins with David Abercrombie, an avid hunter, fisher and trapper from Baltimore, Maryland. He wanted to capitalize on his passion for the outdoors by opening an outdoor outfitters store in New York City. At its start in1892, it was just a little waterfront shop with a modest inventory of outdoor clothes, home-made tents, guns, and other equipment. As Abercrombie's store began to grow in popularity, it caught the eye of a wealthy and successful lawyer and investor, Ezra Fitch, who began a partnership with him in 1900. The two owners decided to expand their store and purchase a store front on Broadway in downtown New York City (which moved to 5th Avenue a few years later). The clothes that were sold by A&F were designed for the true outdoorsman. Presidents Teddy Roosevelt and William Howard Taft patronized the store by using them for their hunting excursions in the west. Hemingway bought his guns there. A&F supplied equipment for the first trip to the North Pole. The salesmen inside the store were true outdoorsmen hired to come in and model the clothes for customers as they browsed through the store. The clothes had become so popular that people who were not outdoorsmen at all began to wear the clothes just because it was "cool." They bought the clothes and looked the part, but really…. They were just fakes.
Do you see where this is going? Sometimes, Christians buy the clothes and look and act the part, but in the end, they are just fake. Their lips proclaim the glory of the Lord and confess that Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior, but in their hearts…they don't mean any of it.
This, I think, is what turns a lot of people away from being a Christian. Their friends or their family consider themselves Christian because "they go to church" or "they pray every night" or "they do good things," but when they aren't at church or when they aren't in company, they can turn that "Christian Switch" off and become something that totally misrepresents Christ.
Matthew 7:21 says, "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." John gives us a warning in Revelation 3:16 about being a "lukewarm Christian" saying that God will split us out if we become that way.
If you're going to carry the cross of being a Christian, be a real Christian. Understand that everyone falls short of the glory of God, but don't give anyone a reason to doubt what you believe. God calls us to be salt and light all the time…. not just when we feel like it…or when we are in church….or just when people are watching. Don't buy the clothes without realizing what they mean. Don't be an Abercrombie and Fake.
