When members of the seven Methodist churches in the San Luis Valley in South Central Colorado decided, in the late 40's, that Christian Youth camps were very important in young lives and the distance to such camps was too great, they selected a special spot in the Rio Grande National Forest near South Fork and, with a lease from the USFS, built their own camp, literally "with their own hands". Without going into debt they added cabins, a lodge with a kitchen, an infirmary, a manager's cabin, etc.
Through the years, Beaver Creek camp has been a successful rustic, summers-only camp which has served a multitude of individuals both secular and non-secular, regardless of ethnicity, age, gender, disability or income. Primary usage has been for youth.
For more than 60 years, BCYC has functioned as a summer camp serving United Methodist churches and other denominations, 4-H and Scout camps, Earthwatch Institute, school groups (i.e. cross-country running teams, etc.), Camp Hope for physically and mentally challenged children and adults, as well as artist's workshops, family reunions, weddings, retreats, planning sessions and more.
Oversight of the camp is provided through the Commission, which is now comprised of volunteer members from the eight United Methodist churches, one Baptist Church, and one Presbyterian Church, who reside in the San Luis Valley. The Commission meets regularly and is actively involved in all operations and maintenance of the camp.
